So how long you been doing it?
Blimey! back in about 1985 at a place called Lodge Farm Youth Club in Loughborough. I started doing stuff for a local Modernist society called the ABSC mostly playing Northern and 6t's R&B & Jazz. I then moved to Northamptonshire in 1987 and started up the Northern Soul Brat Pack with Kass (partner) and Danny Mobley using various venues around the county. By 94 we were getting a little pissed off with the whole Northern thing and the lack of younger people involved in it so we started The Buzz as a launch pad to mix decent new music with the older stuff we loved.
What musicians/DJ's do you admire:
Since the early days I always had a certain admiration for Keb Darge (Legendary Deep Funk DJ). I used to visit the Leicester Oddfellows All-nighters in the early 80's and it was the usual Northern Oldies but downstairs in the
smaller room this brash Scotsman came on and blew me away with all these strange 6t's newies (basically 6t's rarities only recently discovered and therefore new sounds). He disappeared after the close of the Stafford nighters in the late 80's and re-invented himself in the late 90's after discovering all these rare Deep Funk tunes and basically bringing the Deep Funk scene to the masses. Other DJ's I really admire are those who play for the crowd and not themselves but manage to keep the content fresh, interesting and not rip off other dj's tunes in the process
which is difficult but not impossible.
Best excavation:
2 copies of Nancy Wilson's "Uptight" on British demo for 50p each in World Records, Leicester. It has her stunning
version of "You've got your troubles" on the B side.
A copy of "Dude" by Pappy's Haunted House On Mide, super uptempo hammond freakout. Johnny Vegas brought this to my attention and I've spent the last year looking for a copy, searching Ebay & Gemm constantly.
I've seen a few around but always at stupid prices as it had been picked up by the Deep FUnk scene and started to fetch big money. I did a search for it one day on Google and found one at Flipside Records for $25 (£13) what a deal and superb sellers. I'm now a very happy boy.
Ebay or Gemm:
Both, if you see something on Ebay which is a little too pricey check it out on Gemm. It works for me.
Most prized DJ equipment:
My dinks & my hipflask.
Favorite tipple:
A bottle of Newcastle Brown Ale a VAT or any Spanish or Mexican beer, Vodka, Rum, Brandy ect.... If you're asking.
Best piece of DJ advice:
Create your own set and try not to copy other peoples just because you know a tune is popular and it will fill
the floor. Anybody can do that, be an inspirational DJ and not a jukebox! (as you can see its a bit of a pet hate of
mine and worth bering in mind if you fancy having a guest spot at The Buzz).

Buzz Tunes
Mark Murphy - Why Don't You Do Right (Riverside)
Classic early 60's Jazz Dance tune from Sammy Davis Jnrs protege. I only discovered it recently but I was hooked by the whole swaying beat and the delivery is spot on. Bit of a contender for Mel Torme in the Jazz stakes me thinks!
Ann Margret - Thirteen Men (Sony)
Ok so I only heard this tune whilst enjoying my honeymoon but what a number. Ann Margret has to be one of the most swinging 60's girls there was. Although she features in many teen and beach films including a starring role along side Elvis this track, although unknown by most people it has to be her best.
Richard Berry - Have Love Will Travel (Flip)
First heard this version about 1988 at the Isle Of White Mod rally. Me old mate Ciro Affronti (the main man behind Ketterings famous North Park venue) brought it to my attention and I picked it up for about £5. Superb doo-wap sound from the man who also penned Louie, Louie.
